Irish Aid is committed to ensuring that the Our World Awards website is accessible to as many users as possible, including people with disabilities. We aim to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.
Accessibility and inclusion are central to our values, and we are continually working to improve the user experience for all visitors.
Current Status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, due to the issues and limitations listed below.
Accessibility Features
We have implemented the following features to support accessibility:
- Responsive layout and scalable text — content adjusts to different screen sizes, improving readability for users with low vision or on mobile devices
- Structured navigation and headings — menus like "Features," "Stories of Change," and educator sections follow a consistent structure that supports screen readers
- Cookie preferences panel (as seen on gov.ie link) — indicates compliance with EU accessibility and privacy standards, offering control over consent
- Bilingual content availability — support for both English and Irish (“As Gaeilge”), which helps meet broader accessibility and inclusion needs
- Mostly sufficient colour contrast across most elements
- Logical screen reader flow and content structure
- Use of semantic HTML where possible to support assistive technologies
Accessibility Features
We are aware of the following areas that do not yet meet full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance:
- Insufficient colour contrast between text and background in some areas, which may affect readability for users with visual impairments
- Links lacking descriptive text, making them unclear when accessed with screen readers
- Links not structured within lists in some menus, which may affect navigation consistency for assistive technologies
- Some links are not distinguishable without colour vision.
- Missing or incomplete alternative text on certain images
- Redundant or unnecessary title attributes on some links, which can create confusion for screen reader users
- Embedded iframes (e.g., maps or media) that do not include appropriate title attributes to describe their purpose
- Some videos are embedded via Vimeo. As these are third-party components, some accessibility features may be limited and outside our control
- Some downloadable documents (e.g., PDFs) may not be fully accessible, such as lacking proper tagging, reading order, colour contrast or text alternatives
This list is not exhaustive.
We are continuing to audit and review the site to uncover and resolve additional accessibility barriers.
Exemptions
Some older documents and content are not required, by law, to be made accessible (visit European Union (Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies) Regulations 2020 for more information on exemptions).
Planned Improvements
We are committed to improving the accessibility of this website and continue to make updates as part of an ongoing review process. This includes refining content structure, enhancing compatibility with assistive technologies, and addressing any barriers identified through testing and user feedback. Our goal is to ensure a more inclusive and accessible experience for all users over time.
